Poetry Writing, Grades 6-8

Poetry Writing will help students explore the craft of poetry by reading, understanding, and writing poems that express who they are and who they want to be. The first section of the book offers step-by-step skill-building lessons that teach techniques that poets use, such as: rhythm, alliteration, onomatopoeia, similes, metaphors, repetition, tone and mood, imagery, line breaks and white space, and more. Following the skill-building lessons, students learn to apply their skills by writing original poetry. Each type of poem that students write is accompanied by a teacher's guide, a student assignment work sheet, sample poems, comprehension questions, and other supplementary materials. Types of poems offered in this volume include: character poems, curiosity poems, event poems, found poems, love poems, memory poems, self-expression poems, and many more. The final section of the book offers several suggestions for celebrating student work. Reproducible. 144 pages.
