After enduring the cruelties of the Japanese military, occupying Korea in 1945, ten-year-old Sookan and her family face a life under the rule of communism, and decide, instead, to flee to America. Sookan and her young brother risk hardship, hunger, separation from their mother, and danger to escape from the oppression of Soviet-occupied North Korea.
